Description
The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250 | 85 MC4 is a high-voltage, high-current MPPT solar charge controller designed for advanced off-grid installations. With 250V PV input capability and 85A charging output, it is ideal for large RV solar systems, off-grid cabins, marine power systems, tiny homes, mobile commercial trailers, and residential-style PV arrays.
This MC4 version includes factory-installed MC4 connectors for fast, safe, and reliable solar wiring with modern PV arrays. MC4 inputs simplify roof installations, reduce wiring errors, and support long series strings of 60-cell, 72-cell, and bifacial solar modules.
Featuring Victron’s Ultra-Fast Maximum Power Point Tracking, the controller maximizes solar harvest even under partial shading and rapidly changing light conditions. Bluetooth Smart is built in for configuration and monitoring via the VictronConnect app, and VE.Direct provides expanded system integration.
Refer to the SmartSolar MPPT user manual (uploaded earlier) for diagrams, wiring guidance, fusing, PV design rules, and lithium battery programming.
Solar Array Capability
With a 250V PV limit and MC4-ready PV connections, this controller is optimized for high-voltage residential solar panels.
Maximum Recommended Solar Array Size
| Battery Voltage | Max Charge Amps | Max Recommended Solar |
|---|---|---|
| 12V system | 85A | ≈ 1,200W |
| 24V system | 85A | ≈ 2,400W |
| 48V system | 85A | ≈ 4,800W |
Array oversizing is allowed; output safely limits to 85A.
Engineering Solar Table (Vmp / Imp / Series Limits)
| Panel Type | Vmp Range | Imp Range | Max Panels in Series (250V limit) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60-cell residential panel | 30–33V | 8–9A | Up to 7S | Ideal for cabins and fixed installations |
| 72-cell residential panel | 37–39V | 8–10A | Up to 6S | Preferred for 48V systems |
| 144-half-cut bifacial | 38–41V | 10–13A | Up to 6S | High-efficiency modules |
| 24V 350–450W panel | 32–38V | 9–11A | Up to 7S | Excellent for marine/tiny home systems |
| 12V RV 100W module | 18–19V | 5–6A | Up to 13S | Not optimal—low current relative to MPPT size |
This controller is built for residential-grade PV, not small RV panels.
